As life seems to be getting closer to normal, many aspects of life will return, especially for our children. More time in school will provide the opportunity for more infections and illnesses. More time to play with friends will probably include more cuts, bruises, and maybe a broken bone. When these things happen, it is good to know that help is easily available. SoCal Urgent Care can help when you need someone to take care of your child and your regular doctor isn’t available, or if you don’t have a regular doctor.

What are the most common urgent care conditions for kids?

The most common need for urgent care for children is for those things that are a part of growing up. They are the infections that they get at school, colds, flu, and strep throat. Generally, upper respiratory infections—those that affect the nose, throat, sinuses, and larynx are quite common in kids.

Fevers are quite commonly treated in urgent care settings, especially in younger children.

Ear infections tend to cause a great deal of stress for people with young kids. These are treated frequently at SoCal Urgent Care.

Lacerations and fractures from accidents are commonly treated in urgent care. Kids play after school and on weekends. They often get hurt after regular practices are closed. SoCal Urgent Care is open for longer hours, so these can be addressed when needed.

When should I take my child to urgent care vs. the ER?

Urgent is not the same as an ER. SoCal Urgent Care is set up to fill the gap between your pediatrician or family doctor and the ER. An ER is designed to handle the most traumatic medical issues, such as when events are so serious that they are life-threatening. If a cut is causing a great deal of blood loss, then the ER is the place to go. If a broken leg has multiple breaks and bone is coming through the skin, an ER is needed. If there is loss of consciousness, shortness of breath, or a serious back injury, then going to the ER is essential.

Urgent care can handle cuts that are deep, that have not lost too much blood, and that need to be stitched. Urgent care can handle the broken bones that happen most of the time; you know, the kind that requires a splint or a cast. Urgent care clinics can handle issues that require attention but are not life-threatening.

Urgent care clinics are also good at diagnosing and treating strep throat and similar infections because most will have lab equipment that can get results quickly.
